Hurricanes and Elevators:
What to do before, during and after
-
BEFORE:
▸ Ensure machine room venting, entryways, and hatches are watertight. Cover windows with plywood.
▸ Check all sump pumps, float switches, and alarms in the elevator pit.
▸ Place sandbags along the bottom of the hoistway doors, if the elevator opens to the outside.
-
DURING:
▸ Run elevators at the top floor of the hoistway, and pull the main breaker in the elevator machine room.
▸ Ensure no passengers are in the elevators, then park them with doors closed to prevent unauthorized or manual access.
▸ Do not run elevators during severe weather.
-
AFTER:
▸ Inspect the cab, pit and control room for water. If water is found, call us right away! Do not attempt to restart the elevators if water is found.
▸ Open any vents that were closed up, and remove any sandbags.
▸ If the power is out, call your electric company before turning on the breaker.
Elevator Safety
Elevator safety during severe weather conditions is paramount, and we urge you to take proactive steps to gear up your elevators for the unpredictable challenges that lie ahead. Here are some important reminders to help you prepare:
Inspect & Maintain
Prioritize a thorough inspection and maintenance check of your elevators. Schedule a visit from certified technicians to assess and address any potential issues that could compromise safety.
Communication Systems
Confirm that your elevators are equipped with reliable communication systems such as intercoms or emergency phones. These channels are vital in case of emergencies, allowing occupants to stay connected with emergency services or building management.
Emergency Power Backup
Verify that your elevators are equipped with reliable emergency power backup systems. Ensure they are in optimal working condition, capable of providing sufficient power during power outages or fluctuations caused by storms.
Clear Evacuation Plan
Develop and communicate a clear evacuation plan for building occupants. Ensure that everyone is aware of the designated safe areas and procedures to follow in case of an evacuation.
Storm Shutters & Sealing
Secure your elevator shafts by installing storm shutters or covers to prevent water and debris from entering. Additionally, check for any gaps or leaks in the sealing and address them promptly.
Stay Informed
Stay up to date with the latest weather updates and advisories from local authorities. Timely information can help you make informed decisions regarding elevator usage during hazardous weather conditions.
